What is william henry redmond?

William Henry Redmond (1839-1880) was an Irish Nationalist politician. He was born in Co. Wexford and educated at Trinity College Dublin. He was called to the Bar and became a successful barrister.

Redmond was elected to the House of Commons in 1872 as a member of the Home Rule League, a forerunner of the Irish Parliamentary Party. He represented Wexford until his death in 1880.

Redmond was a moderate Home Ruler and worked closely with Isaac Butt, the leader of the Home Rule movement. He supported Butt's policy of securing Home Rule for Ireland through constitutional means rather than through violent rebellion.

In 1879, Redmond was appointed as Chief Secretary for Ireland in the short-lived Liberal government of William Ewart Gladstone. However, his tenure was brief as he died the following year from a heart attack while on a visit to the United States.

Redmond's son, John Redmond, became leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party and played a prominent role in the movement for Home Rule.
